I am a long-time and die-hard fan of Rooster Teeth (dating all the way back to Strangerhood many moons ago). I spend my days after work watching Achievement Hunter, I fall asleep listening to playlists of FunHaus videos, I proudly sport my sarcastic Rooster Teeth shirts at work, and I text frequently in Gavin reaction gifs. There's a sense of pride that comes along with being part of the RT Community, knowing you support such incredibly talented people, who consistently make quality content. They're just an impressive company, one that I am so proud to be supporting on a month-to-month basis. As someone who religiously watches close to 75% of their new releases -daily- I can seriously advocate that there's no better time than right now to become a First Member (check it here - click there, like now, it's awesome). From personal experience, it's one of the best subscription services I have, if not the best. The exclusive perks far outweigh the incredibly minimal fee they ask of you (and you get a shiny gold star next to your name). You can watch podcasts and shows like On The Spot recorded live, see exclusive content like Theater Mode, watch content a day before everyone else, get discounts in the store, and you get the feeling that you're doing something great by supporting a very hard-working and talented group of people do what they love, all for your entertainment. But, perhaps more than anything else in this world, you get BackwardzCompatible. Meet the infamous, creative mastermind Miles Luna (right) and his sassy, smart-assy buddy Kyle Taylor (left), just two dudes with a love for scary video games and way too much free time on their hands. This is BackwardzCompatible - it's exclusive for first members, it's hella funny, and it's my favorite thing on Rooster Teeth right now. ![]() When it comes to the genre of "let's plays", a lot of us find it synonymous with people like Markiplier and PewDiePie and typically we associate the term with horror. Many people fell in love with the genre at its inception when the majority of YouTuber's were actually doing consistent, full length play-throughs of video games - from first press of the start button to the roll of the credits. We got to settle in for lengthy videos of scares, screams, and hilarious commentary. It's why I, personally, fell in love with let's plays, and it's an art that has fallen to the wayside now that content amount is more important than content quality for many popular Tubers. I had a big hole in my heart from the lack of scary, full-length play throughs. And then this happened, this glorious First Member perk called BackwardzCompatible. ![]() I. Love. This. Show. It's one of those shows that I wish got more than one episode a week because it's so freaking entertaining. There's nothing overly unique about it, but the dynamics and long-time friendship between Miles and Kyle, mixed with the genuine scares and down-to-earth commentary make it an addicting and entertaining production to watch. The boys and their personalities make the show, and their choice of content is very on-point for survival horror junkies. Every Friday after work I settle onto the couch, load up the RT App on my XBOX and ready myself for a night of new BackwardzCompatible and Theater Mode (another addicting exclusive show), it's my favorite day of the week. Let me break down this simple and insanely enjoyable web-show. It's usually shot after work for the boys, usually late night, after they've had a few drinks. The setting is a low-lit office and the boys are quite alone. Miles and Kyle are two lovable dorks (known for their work on productions like RWBY, Red Vs Blue, and Camp Camp) who are witty, funny, easy to scare, and genuinely have a passion for intense horror games (well, maybe not Miles). The show is full of amusing commentary, genuine freak-out moments, and hours of solid entertainment. It feels very personal and very old-school, like those classic Amnesia and Until Dawn play throughs that had you constantly refreshing your feed, just hoping a new installment would be uploaded in between reloads. It's brilliantly paced, they don't jump around from moment to moment to try and rush through a gameplay but they don't linger long and keep things moving, which is so refreshing. Consistently, you're looking at forty five minutes to an hour-plus for each episode. The content is a perfect blend of amusing, tense, and engrossing moments, with sassy and intelligent conversations in between the immersive gameplay. The commentary is always very fresh and relevant, with goofy notes about the characters and the story of the game, an absurd amount of pro wrestling references, and the two are always up to crazy antics (they literally argue over the proper pronunciation of Schrödinger for a good five minutes at one point). You'll want to just lay down on the floor and give the earth a hug after watching an episode (there's quite a bit of drinking, floor hugging ensues). Even if you aren't an avid survival horror gamer, or the genre isn't your cup of tea when it comes to Rooster Teeth let's plays (or let's plays in general), it's one of those shows that makes you have flashbacks to the good old days of midnight releases and pulling all nighters with your friends in the basement. There's a lot of potential for this show to continue on for a long period of time, since the two games they've chosen to play (thus far) are both quite lengthy and very scary, which excites me to no end. It's something that you have to experience if you love let's plays, and it's a perfect excuse to get a First Membership (if only just to watch the new Resident Evil 7 play through they're currently recording). It's hard to show you just how great this show is, due to the exclusivity of the content, but with a free month of membership it's worth signing up to get your scare-binge on and watch them play all the way through Fatal Frame. They appreciate the support, there's hours of content to enjoy, and I can't advocate enough as to how worthwhile nabbing a membership is. Much love to both Miles and Kyle for their handwork throughout the company and for making my Friday nights much, much better. ![]() Written by Alycia D.
